Conference Themes

IHM-HCI'2001 will cover all main areas of HCI research but will focus on considering the challenges of new applications addressing these themes:

  • enriching HCI by crossing national, linguistic and cultural boundaries
  • achieving greater co-operation between disciplines to deliver usable, useful and exciting design solutions
  • benefiting from experience gained in other application areas
  • transcending interaction constraints through the use of novel technologies
  • supporting mobile users

We must enable users, designers, developers, project leaders and other stakeholders to go beyond existing boundaries, to

  • respond to challenges in areas such as e-commerce, teleworking and distance education
  • accommodate art, computer science, design, education theory, marketing, psychology, sociology, theatre, and other disciplines as needed
  • build upon insights from fields such as safety-critical systems, multimodal systems, multimedia computing and creativity tools
  • include novel interaction techniques and design artefacts for multiple contexts of use
  • support nomadic computing, wearable computers, and mobile user interfaces

Topics

Submissions on all areas of HCI are invited, but we strongly encourage ones addressing the new challenges posed by our themes. Suitable topic areas include: interactive system design; interaction tools & techniques; users with special needs, design issues that cross boundaries (cultural, linguistic, disciplinary); theoretical, organisational, social and cultural issues.

Doctoral Consortium

The doctoral at IHM-HCI 2001 is a forum in which PhD students can present and discuss their work in progress with a panel of experts.

Submissions should be in the form of two A4 pages summarising the student's research programme and reporting the work to date.

Proposals should be accompanied by a covering letter from the supervisor of the research confirming registration and the start date of the research. Accepted submissions will be published in Volume 2 of the IHM-HCI 2001Conference Proceedings. Students accepted to the IHM-HCI 2001 doctoral consortium will be given free registration to the full conference.

Workshops

Workshops provide a valuable opportunity for small groups to meet and engage in rich and interactive discussions about topics of common interest.

We invite submissions addressing any topic interesting for the HCI community: basic research, applied research, new methodologies, emerging application areas, tools, models and design innovations. Workshops may result in edited books or special issues of journals, and you could aim for that in the design of your workshop.

A workshop may be one, one and a half, or two days in length. We encourage electronic submissions (no more than two pages in PDF format). They should describe goals of the workshop, clear and detailed description of the topics that should be discussed and why they are important and timeliness, and indication of the background of potential participants. They should be sent to both workshop co-chairs. Authors of accepted worshop proposals will be asked to provide a 2 page workshop summary in camera ready format for inclusion in Volume 2 of the conference proceedings.

Up to two organizers of accepted workshops will receive free registration for the main conference.

Tutorials

Half or full day tutorials are solicited on any aspect of Human Computer Interaction, but particularly those related to the use of the Internet or new media. Tutorial styles can range from theoretical to practical, and tutorial attendees range from novices to experts.

Tutorial proposals should be sent to the English or French tutorials chair (depending upon the language) by the 26th January 2001. Tutorial presenters are expected to attend the conference and the payment offered may be remitted against conference fees.

The proposal should include:

  • The title of the tutorial and an indication is it is a half day or all day. (If possible, two linked half day tutorials rather than an all day tutorial should be suggested).
  • The name, address, telephone number, fax number e-mail address and institutional affiliation of the presenter or presenters and a brief cv for each (maximum 250 words) emphasising their suitability for delivering the tutorial.
  • An explicit indication if the tutorial is to be offered in English or in French (there will be no simultaneous translation facilities for tutorials).
  • A short description of the tutorial (maximum 250 words) that will be published in the advance programme and used for publicity.
  • A statement of context: this should indicate the aims of the tutorial, the nature of the intended audience and what benefits they will gain from attending the tutorial. (This should not exceed two pages of A4).
  • A statement giving details of the presentation and interaction techniques that will be used.
  • If the tutorial, or a similar one, has been given before some sample material from that presentation may be included and an indication of how it will be adapted for this audience should be provided

If accepted a two page description of the tutorial for inclusion in volume 2 conference format will be required by the 31st April 2000. Camera ready copies of tutorial notes will be required in advance of the conference - precise deadline to be announced..

Panels

Timely and controversial topics on HCI research are solicited for discussion.
A good panel will: stimulate thought and discussion on some controversial or emerging issue; involve 3-5 panellists and a strong moderator/chair; give more opportunity for the audience to become involved in the discussion than in other types of sessions.

Novel formats and topics suitable for achieving the above aims are particularly welcome.
Panel proposals up to 3 pages in length are solicited. They should include: An introduction by the organiser/moderator; position statements from each panellist, brief biographical sketches of all participants.

Enquiries may be addressed to the panels chairs:

Interactive Experience

The Interactive Experience is the part of the conference that enables participants to explore the future of user interfaces through hands-on interaction. Entries should consist of live demonstrations of experimental interactive systems, novel user interfaces or interactive art. Systems should preferably be operable by participants with little or no assistance.
To submit, send a 2-page summary to be included in volume 2 of the proceedings and a 3 to 5-page decription of the proposed installation, including a detailed list of technical requirements and a presentation of how the system would be experienced by the participants. E-mail submissions (PDF only) are strongly encouraged.

Laboratory And Organisational Overviews

Laboratory and Organisational Overviews provide a forum for HCI research groups in universities or research institutions, and product development teams in IT provider and user organisations (commercial or public sector), to introduce themselves to the wider HCI community, and to share some of the insights, challenges and successes in their work.

To encourage informal exchanges, a room will be reserved throughout the conference for the Laboratory and Organisational Overviews. Each team will be able to show its activities using various materials (posters, videos, demonstrations etc.). In addition, each team will be allocated a 20-minute programme slot in which to present their work and to highlight the HCI issues they have addressed, results they have achieved and future challenges they anticipate.

Submissions may be paper-based or electronic. Electronic submissions must be in PDF format. Each submission must have the following two parts.

Part 1
A two (A4) page summary. The summaries of accepted proposals will be published in volume two of the conference proceedings.

Part 2
A detailed proposal of not more than six (A4) pages. This should cover:

  • outline of the laboratory or organisation, its history, current work and future plans;
  • the HCI issues addressed by the work of the laboratory or organisation;
  • the people involved and their backgrounds;
  • specific projects, methods or approaches in their work;
  • key publications, products or other results;
  • materials that will be used in the presentation room or in the programme talk.

Submissions and enquiries should be sent to either:

Industry day

The first day of the main conference will focus on industry. This will enable those whose wish to to combine tutorial attendance with participation with one focused day of the conference. The goals of this day are to:

  • give industrial and commercial organisations the opportunity to present their work in HCI and usability (practices, methods, tools, results from evaluation, etc.);
  • give all participants the chance to learn more about HCI practice and to discuss different approaches.

Regular research papers from industrial researchers should be submitted in the standard manner as long or short papers / posters. Laboratory overviews should be submitted to the Laboratory Overviews track. Other papers submitted particularly for industry day should be up to two pages long, following the submission guidelines for Volume 2. Contributions are particularly solicited on the following:

  • tools and methods for usability and HCI design in the industrial context;
  • experiences in design for different user groups;
  • results of experience in practice;
  • product evaluations;
  • experience of training people in HCI and usability techniques.

Contributions should be sent, on paper or pdf format, to either of the Industry Day chairs.
