Short papers selected for publication in volume 1 of the proceedings

  1. Interface Affect and Familiarity. Some Implications for Designing the Interaction
Elizabeth Uruchurtu, Heriot-Watt University, Roger Rist, Heriot-Watt University, Lachlan Mackinnon, University of Abertay Dundee
A study carried out to evaluate how interface affect influences learning performance. Results suggests that interface style impacts on learners’ interface familiarity and affect, and on their learning performance.

  2. Does being motivated to avoid procedural errors influence their systematicity?
Jonathan Back, UCL, Wai Lok Cheng, QMUL, Rob Dann, QMUL, Paul Curzon, QMUL, Ann Blandford, UCL
Even when individuals are strongly motivated to avoid post-completion errors user performance remains vulnerable to this error type. Within engaging environments this vulnerability is likely to be more exposed.

  3. Severity of usability and accessibility problems in eCommerce and eGovernment websites
    Chandra Harrison, University of York
    Helen Petrie, University of York
Prioritising usability and accessibility problems assists in website development. Unpacking the severity of these problems during a user study revealed that participants definitely found some problems more important than others.

  4. mSpace Mobile: Exploring Support for Mobile Tasks
Max L. Wilson, Alistair Russell, Daniel A. Smith, m.c. schraefel, University of Southampton
We present a formative study comparing two Web application interfaces, mSpace Mobile and Google Local in supporting location discovery tasks on mobile devices while stationary and while on the move.

  5. Involvement in Listening to Music from a Computer: The Effects of Pre-Existing Mood
Kari Kallinen, Timo Saari, Niklas Ravaja, Mikko Salminen, Helsinki School of Economics
Effects of pre-existing mood and emotional music on involvement in listening to music from a computer was investigated. The results are of importance, given that listening to music using computers and portable devices has increased rapidly, and given the uses of music in multimodal contexts, such as in computer games.

  6. Aesthetic and Symbolic Qualities as Antecedents of Overall Judgements of Interactive Products
Sascha Mahlke, Berlin University of Technology
In an explorative study the role of different dimensions of non-instrumental quality and their influence on overall judgements of an interactive product were studied

  7. Plotting Affect and Premises for Use in Aesthetic Interaction Design: towards evaluation for the everyday
Sarah Kettley, M Smyth, Napier University
A method for plotting participants’ readings of a novel wearable concept is described with a view to more accurately understanding how utilitarian and aesthetic figurations are managed in everyday use.
