Interactive Experiences
A ‘hands on’ participatory session
Chair: Simon Lock, Lancaster University
This will be a dynamic session in which audience participation is actively encouraged. As the title suggests, this gives researchers and practitioners the opportunity to demonstrate the latest technological devices and applications to an audience who will be able to engage with these products for themselves.
This is basically an ‘interactive poster’ session in which you will be able to experience ‘cutting edge’ interactive devices. These devices can include videos, installations, novel interfaces and performative arenas. There is also the opportunity to feed back on how these interactive experiences might be improved or utilised in other ways.
These devices will be on show throughout the day which means you will have plenty of time to view, try out and discuss these with the demonstrators.
Call for participation!

The Interactive Experiences stream of British HCI is the forum for the demonstration of real systems, advanced prototypes, pre-recorded or dynamic videos, interactive installations, HCI related live performance and so on. This includes a wide variety of dynamic and "touchable" experiences for which a standard paper presentation would not fully convey the appeal or novelty of the work.
An Interactive experience could involve the demonstration of a new device or novel application of existing technologies. It could present an engaging experience which highlights some unique interactive phenomenon. It could involve a video or live performance illustrating an interaction or a unique design methodology. It could also take the form a demonstration showing how tool support can be used in interface design or to enrich the experience or the user.
Proposals may also be submitted for interactive surveys or polls that will take advantage of the assembly of expert practitioners present at the conference. The results should be made available during the conference itself and the data published on the conference web site.
All submissions must include:
- A covering letter detailing the materials, equipment and space required (e.g. room size, software required, tables, power supply, network access, projection surfaces etc).
- A description, of no more than four pages (prepared using the template below) explaining the Interactive Experience and presenting the case for why it should be included at the conference. This document will be used in the reviewing process and, if accepted, will be published in the conference proceedings.
- A 30 word summary to promote the interactive experience for the purposes of publicity.
In addition, CDs or video material may be sent to support your proposal. If these are smaller than 5MB in overall size, they can be submitted online. Otherwise, please contact
Simon Lock to arrange for them to be sent separately.
Please note that we are unable to return hard-copies of any original materials.
